How to add a song

Add a song from your dashboard: find it on Spotify or type it in, list the songwriters and their splits, and submit it for registration.

To add a song, open Add a Song in the sidebar, find the recording on Spotify or type it in, list everyone who wrote it with their share, and click Submit for registration. The whole form fits on one page, and a Registration preview on the side shows what will be filed as you type.

Before you start

Finish your profile first. If it isn't complete, Add a Song sends you to your Profile to fill it in.

If you haven't added a PRO or IPI number, the form shows a notice. It means we can only register you on the mechanical side for now. To collect the performance side too, join a PRO and add your details to your profile. Our guide to performing rights organizations explains how, and Do I still need ASCAP or BMI? covers why it matters.

Steps

  1. Open Add a Song in the sidebar, or click Add a song on My Songs.
  2. Under Find your song, search Spotify by song title or recording artist. Pick your recording and we fill in the title, ISRC and release date. Recordings from your own Spotify page are marked Yours. Not on Spotify? Choose Add it by hand below.
  3. If your account has more than one name, pick the Performing name the song is released under.
  4. Check the Song title.
  5. Under Songwriters, the first row is you, the primary songwriter. Your share is whatever is left after co-writers.
  6. To add someone who wrote it with you, click Add co-writer and pick them from your saved songwriters. See Adding co-writers and splits.
  7. Make sure the bar reads Fully allocated. Splits must add up to exactly 100%.
  8. Under Recording & identifiers, fill in the Recording artist and either the Recording title or the ISRC. The ISWC is optional.
  9. Click Submit for registration, then Submit in the confirmation box.

The song then appears in My Songs.

Good to know

  • One recording goes with each submission.
  • The Spotify import never fills in the songwriters. The performer on a recording is not always the person who wrote the song, so that part is always yours to enter.
  • The confirmation box says it plainly: you can change the splits until we file the song. After that, you request any change from the song's page and we file the correction. See Changing a song after you submit it.
  • Save as draft keeps a half-finished song. Only a title is needed. Drafts show in My Songs as Draft, and nothing is filed until you submit.

To follow a song after you submit it, see What each song status means.

Common questions

Can I save a song and finish it later?

Yes. Click Save as draft. A draft only needs a title. Open it again from My Songs to keep going.

Do I need an ISRC?

Each recording needs a title or an ISRC, plus the recording artist. The ISRC is optional if you give the recording title.
