Why a song says Held

Held means another publisher already has the song registered, so we haven't filed it. Here is why, and what you can do.

A song says Held when another publisher already has it registered, so we haven't filed it. We never file over another publisher. The song's page says the same thing: another publisher has this song registered, so we haven't filed it, and we'll email you if we need your signature.

Why we don't file it

When two publishers register the same share of the same song, the society flags the conflict and freezes payment on it. Nobody gets paid until it's sorted out. Filing a second claim would put your royalties at risk, so a Held song is the check doing its job, not an error.

This can happen when a song was part of an earlier publishing or administration deal. Under our Terms, a song that is still committed to another publisher or administrator shouldn't be submitted to us while that deal is in effect.

Where you see it

  • Songs you added yourself stay in My Songs with a Held badge, so your list never hides your own submissions.
  • Songs we found for you that another publisher already holds are left out of My Songs and the song counts. If a release of yours is missing from the list, this can be the reason.

A Held song shows one Held card on its page instead of the usual Performance and Mechanical tracks. Those tracks would promise a filing that isn't coming.

If a song needs your decision

Sometimes a society reports another publisher's claim after a song you added was filed. Then the song shows Needs your decision in My Songs. Its page has a card titled Another publisher claims this song. It names the society, names the other publisher when we know it, and tells you which royalties are held until the claim is resolved.

You get two choices on that card:

  • Transfer to Davincii: you sign one authorization, which we prepare, and we handle the filing with the society.
  • Release the claim: we withdraw our registration at that society. The existing publisher keeps collecting and the hold on royalties is lifted.

Nothing is filed anywhere until you choose. If you have questions first, write to info@davincii.co.

If you think it's wrong

If you believe the other publisher shouldn't hold the song, or your deal with them has ended, write to info@davincii.co from your account email. If you're moving from another administrator, Switching to Davincii from another administrator explains how that works.

For the other statuses, see What each song status means, and for other songs we leave out, see Songs we don't register.

Common questions

Will you register a Held song anyway?

No. We never file over another publisher. Two claims on the same share make the society freeze payment on it.

Why is one of my released songs missing from My Songs?

Songs we found for you that another publisher already holds are left out of My Songs and its counts.
