HFA

SESAC has owned HFA since its 2015 acquisition. It covers US mechanicals outside streaming (CDs, vinyl, downloads) and facilitates sync licensing. Although most streaming mechanicals shifted to the MLC in 2021, HFA continues directly administering certain publisher catalogs.

What HFA collects

Mechanical royalties go through a mechanical rights society when a composition is reproduced; today, that usually means streams and downloads instead of physical copies.

In United States, HFA collects physical and download mechanicals, sync. HFA was established in 1927.

Joining HFA

Direct membership is not offered by HFA — affiliation is for publishers; writers don't join directly. Royalties are distributed monthly. Registration here does not require an IPI number.
