SOCAN

Canada's PRO handles performance royalties plus some Canadian streaming mechanicals through the SOCAN Reproduction Rights division. Canadian songwriters join SOCAN; for US writers played in Canada, a US PRO collects under its reciprocal SOCAN agreements.

What SOCAN collects

Performance royalties are collected by a performing rights organization whenever a composition plays publicly, including on radio, television, a stream, or at a live venue.

In Canada, SOCAN collects public performance, streaming mechanicals (via SOCAN Reproduction). SOCAN was established in 1990 and reports approximately 200,000 members.

Joining SOCAN

Joining cost: Free online ($25 CAD only for paper applications). Royalties are distributed quarterly. You need an IPI number — the global identifier connecting a writer with their works, without which registrations cannot be matched to payments.
