SOCAN

The Canadian PRO. Covers performance and (via the SOCAN Reproduction Rights division) some streaming mechanicals in Canada. If you're a Canadian songwriter, you join SOCAN; if you're US and have plays in Canada, your US PRO collects via reciprocal agreements with SOCAN.

What SOCAN collects

A performing rights organization collects performance royalties — money generated when a composition is played publicly, whether that's radio, television, a live venue, or a stream.

SOCAN operates in Canada and collects public performance, streaming mechanicals (via SOCAN Reproduction). It was founded in 1990 and reports roughly 200,000 members.

Joining SOCAN

Joining cost: $50 CAD one-time. Royalties are distributed quarterly. An IPI number is required — that's the global identifier that ties a writer to their works, and without one your registrations can't be matched to payments.
