Publisher share and writer share

Performance royalties are split into a writer share and a publisher share. Here's who pays each one and which one Davincii collects.

Performance royalties are split into two halves: the writer share and the publisher share. Your PRO, such as ASCAP or BMI, pays the writer share straight to you. Davincii collects the publisher share for you and keeps 15% of what we collect.

The writer share

The writer share is paid by your performing rights organization directly to you as a songwriter. It never passes through Davincii. We don't touch it and we take no commission on it.

To receive it, you need to be a member of a PRO. If you're not sure whether you still need one, read do I still need ASCAP or BMI?

The publisher share

The publisher share is the other half. Your PRO membership pays you the writer share, but it doesn't collect the publisher share for you. That's the half Davincii collects.

We register your songs with the societies that pay songwriters worldwide, using our own publisher memberships with each society. There's no middleman taking a cut along the way. When the publisher share comes in, we keep 15% and credit the rest to your balance.

For example, if we collect $100 of publisher-share performance royalties for you, $85 goes to your balance.

Mechanical royalties

Mechanical royalties come from your songs being reproduced, such as streams and downloads. They aren't split into a writer half and a publisher half the way performance royalties are. In the US, The MLC pays them, and we collect them for you. Our commission on mechanical royalties is 20%.

Where you see each one

Every amount on your Royalties page is shown after our commission.

What we charge

There's no signup fee and no subscription. We only earn when we collect for you:

  • 15% of the performance royalties we collect (the publisher share)
  • 20% of mechanical royalties
  • 20% of a sync deal you bring, and 35% when we find it
  • 15% on anything else

See how much Davincii costs or our pricing page.

Your co-writers

We only administer your share of each song. Your co-writers' shares are theirs, and we have no say over them. To learn more about how PROs work, read our guide to performing rights organizations.

Common questions

Does Davincii take a cut of my writer share?

No. The writer share comes straight to you from your PRO. Davincii never touches it and takes no commission on it.

Why don't I see my writer share on my Royalties page?

Your PRO pays it to you directly, so it appears on your PRO statement, not on Davincii's Royalties page.
