SoundExchange

SoundExchange pays for the SOUND RECORDING, not the writing. As the recording artist (whose voice/performance appears on the record), you can collect; as only its writer, you can't. Coverage includes non-interactive digital broadcasts (Pandora, SiriusXM, internet radio) — NOT interactive Spotify or Apple Music streaming.

What SoundExchange collects

A neighboring rights society collects from the recording instead of the composition, then pays its performers and master owner — using a pool separate from songwriter royalties.

In United States, SoundExchange collects digital performance — sound recording owner + featured performer. SoundExchange was established in 2003 and reports approximately 750,000 members.

Joining cost: Free. Royalties are distributed monthly. Registration here does not require an IPI number.
