Germany puts its PRO + mechanical society under one roof. German law grants it wide collection power. Its long, famous fight with YouTube ended in 2016. GEMA collects German plays unless a reciprocal arrangement sends the proceeds back through your home PRO.

What GEMA collects

Performance royalties are collected by a performing rights organization whenever a composition plays publicly, including on radio, television, a stream, or at a live venue.

In Germany, GEMA collects public performance, mechanicals — Germany. GEMA was established in 1933 and reports approximately 85,000 members.

Joining GEMA

Joining cost: €107.10 one-time (€90 + VAT; waived under 30) + €50/year. Royalties are distributed annually (main), quarterly for online and international. You need an IPI number — the global identifier connecting a writer with their works, without which registrations cannot be matched to payments.
